Headphones and railway tracks are a killer combination

This week’s news that a man in Quebec miraculously survived being hit by a train as he walked along the tracks with headphones on and the music cranked up, necessitates another rail safety reminder about the dangers of such behaviour.

Here’s the reality: most people who make the decision to walk along train tracks wearing headphones end up dead. They can’t hear the train coming and they don’t stand a chance.

This is what happened to Andrew West, who was hit by a train and killed in 2001 at the age of 13. Last year, we shared the West family’s story with you.

Need another reminder? We also shared Pam and Ty King’s story with you last year. In 2007, at the age of 18, a train hit and killed Ty while he walked the tracks with his iPod on.

Two young lives, with bright futures ahead of them, gone in an instant. Take the time to read each of these stories again and share them with your friends and family.

Don’t be distracted at level crossings. Stay off. Stay away. Stay alive.

Watch this video from Network Rail and pledge to lose your headphones so you don’t lose your life.
