Operation Lifesaver Calls for Nominations For Roger Cyr Public-Rail Safety Award

OTTAWA, Jan. 12, 2010 – Operation Lifesaver is seeking nominations for personnel who improved safety at highway/ railway crossings and reduced trespassing incidents across Canada in 2009. Deadline for nominations is March 31. Dan Di Tota, national director of Operation Lifesaver, said the winner will be announced during their Rail Safety Week from April 26 to May 2. The award will be presented later, during the Operation Lifesaver conference at Gatineau, QC in September. The Roger Cyr Award for Public-Rail Safety, named after the founder of OL in Canada, identifies presenters, supporters and volunteers for their work, encourages others to implement new initiatives and is specific to an outstanding achievement last year. Best practices collected during the award process are shared broadly with Operation Lifesaver, Transport Canada and Railway Association of Canada stakeholders and partners. The selection panel consists of members of the Operation Lifesaver Program Review Committee. The last winner of the award in 2009 was Tom Allan of Hamilton, ON, an OL volunteer presenter and CN’s former manager of first aid and safety.
