Canadian students color for public-rail safety

Are You Rail Smart?

On June 1, 2010, eleven students from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Manitoba were named winners in the “Train Your Brain” Coloring Contest and awarded official Operation Lifesaver backpacks.

The Train Your Brain Coloring Contest was part of Operation Lifesaver Rail Safety Week (April 26 – May 2) and engaged school-aged students in a rail safety awareness activity.  The contest ran from April 26 until May 25 and saw students between the ages of four and 12 visiting the Operation Lifesaver Kids website (www.olkids.ca) to download coloring sheets.

Participating students were tasked with using their artistic abilities to color the page of their choice and then mail their entry to Operation Lifesaver Canada.  Students chose from 12 colouring sheets depicting train-safety scenarios, including helpful rail-safe behavior tips from Operation Lifesaver’s Rover the Railway Rabbit.  Winners from three age groups were randomly selected, according to their province of entry.

Operation Lifesaver Canada would like to congratulate these winning students for participating in the contest and having their entries drawn:

Operation Lifesaver is an active, on-going public education program designed to heighten general public awareness of the potential hazards of highway/railway crossings and to urge that drivers and pedestrians are cautious when in their vicinity. The program also seeks to inform the public of the dangers associated with trespassing on railway property. The program is a partnership initiative of the Railway Association of Canada and Transport Canada and works in cooperation with the rail industry, government, police, unions, and many public organizations and community groups.
