Announcing the winners of OL’s Thomas & Friends contest

Back in September, OL launched the Stay Safe with Thomas Rail Safety Art Contest as part of Rail Safety Week 2021. We asked Canadian children aged eight and younger to create a piece of original visual artwork—such as a painting, drawing, digital poster, or comic strip—depicting one or more Thomas & FriendsTM characters and one of five important rail safety messages.

We would like to thank all the creative young Canadians who entered the contest. We definitely received some amazing artwork—and picking a winner wasn’t easy. But we are pleased to announce the winners.

In the 4- to 6-year-old age category:
  • 1st: Leanne, Calgary (Alberta)
  • 2nd: Alex, Thompson (Manitoba)
  • 3rd: Declan, Sherwood Park (Alberta)
In the 7- to 8-year-old age category:
  • 1st: Arya, Caledon (Ontario)
  • 2nd: Niam, Regina (Saskatchewan)
  • 3rd: Preston, Belle River (Ontario)

Each of these artistic young people has won some fantastic Thomas & FriendsTM prize packs, courtesy of Mattel. The first prize winners also earned themselves a train trip for four anywhere in the Quebec-Windsor corridor, courtesy of VIA Rail Canada. But everyone who entered the contest learned something even more valuable than any physical prize—how to stay safe around tracks and trains.

“I learned about some important train signs and symbols that we should follow when close to train tracks,” explains first-place winner in the 7 to 8-year-old age category, Arya. “I wanted to show in my picture that sometimes trains can be close to houses where kids are playing and they might think to play on the train tracks. But like Thomas says ‘Train or track, just keep back!’”

You can find Arya’s submission, and all the other winning entries, on our website. Check them out and share them with the people you love.
