Operation Lifesaver’s (OL’s) mission is to get to zero
. Zero rail-related deaths. Zero injuries. Zero crossing and trespassing incidents. But it’s a mission we can’t tackle alone.
Operation Clear Track is one of the key ways we partner with police and other law enforcement agencies to promote rail safety. Held during
Rail Safety Week every year, it is the single largest rail-safety law enforcement initiative in North America.
During Operation Clear Track, hundreds of first responders across the county bring the rail safety message right to Canadians. They distribute rail-safety pamphlets, issue warnings and write citations at rail crossings and along railway rights-of-way to make pedestrians, drivers, and cyclists aware of the cost of taking risks around tracks and trains. This year, they are distributing pamphlets in eight languages, ensuring OL’s life-saving message reaches more Canadians.
Hitting the streets to save lives
More than 600 police detachments from coast-to-coast have signed up to participate in the annual Operation Clear Track, to be held on September 24, 2024. That means hundreds and hundreds of first responders out on our streets, having conversations about rail safety in communities across the country. They will also be spreading the rail-safety message through their social media channels to make people think twice about taking risks around tracks and trains.
“Everyone has a role to play when it comes to rail safety. Raising awareness is key to preventing injuries and deaths, and getting us to zero,” says Chris Day, interim National Director of Operation Lifesaver Canada. “We are so thankful for the hundreds of detachments and agencies that are partnering with us this year and for all the law enforcement professionals who work to keep Canadians safe every day.”
Across North America, a person or vehicle is struck by a train every three hours. Every year, more than 2,100 people are killed or seriously injured in railway crossing or trespassing incidents. Operation Clear Track is a chance for police to improve safety in their communities by providing residents with rail safety information that could save their life.
There is no ‘Undo’ button
The theme of #RSW2024 is “There is no ‘Undo’ button”—a reminder that when it comes to tracks and trains, there is no room for error. One simple mistake could result in life-limiting injuries, permanent disability, and even death.
Help OL spread this life-saving message during Rail Safety Week, and all year round. Let’s work together to stop needless track tragedies from happening and get the number to zero—because everyone has a part to play when it comes to rail safety.
