TIPS FOR EMERGENCY RESPONDERS

Below are some quick rail safety driving tips, as well as a more detailed tip sheet that you can download to print or share. Be sure to follow these tips when you’re behind the wheel or responding to an emergency near railway tracks—they could save your life.

Slow down and be prepared to stop when approaching rail crossings. Never try to race a train through a crossing.

Adjust your speed according to road conditions, weather conditions (visibility), and the
weight of your vehicle.

Don’t proceed through a railway crossing unless you have a clear view of the tracks and are certain no trains are approaching in either direction, on any track.

When stopped at a crossing, look carefully in both directions for approaching trains.
Move your head and eyes to see around obstructions such as mirrors and windshield
pillars, and turn off sirens and other sound-producing devices so that you can hear oncoming trains.

Know the length of your vehicle. In heavy traffic, wait until there is room
on the other side of the crossing before proceeding through. Always allow at least 5 metres between your vehicle and the nearest rail.

Always call the railway to confirm that traffic has stopped before putting any equipment on the tracks. You can find the railway's emergency number on the blue Emergency Notification Sign at the crossing, or on a nearby signal house.
