Railway Safety Tips for Truck Drivers
Below are some quick rail safety driving tips, as well as more detailed tip sheet that you can download to print or share. Be sure to follow these tips when you’re behind the wheel—they could save your life.
Slow down and be prepared to stop when approaching a rail crossing.
Adjust your speed according to road conditions, weather conditions (visibility), and the weight of your vehicle and cargo.
Don’t proceed through a railway crossing unless you have a clear view of the tracks and are certain no trains are approaching in either direction, on any track.
When stopped at a crossing, look carefully in both directions for approaching trains, and move your head and eyes to see around obstructions such as mirrors and windshield pillars.
Know the length of your vehicle. In heavy traffic, wait until there is room on the other side of the crossing before proceeding through.
Always cross tracks in low gear without shifting to reduce the chances of having your vehicle stall in the crossing.
Evacuate passengers and leave your vehicle if it stalls or gets stuck on the tracks, and call the railway or 911 immediately to stop rail traffic.
